She is highly regarded for her deep expertise in domestic and international refugee law and policy and has extensive experience monitoring the conditions of immigration detention facilities in Australia as well as litigation in landmark migration cases in the High Court of Australia. Prior to the Australian Human Rights Commission, she was a lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre. In 2014, she led the landmark National Inquiry into Children in Detention. She currently works on a range of gender equality initiatives with the Champions of Change Coalition, UN Women, and the University of Sydney. In 2021, Somali led the team at the Australian Human Rights Commission conducting the Independent Review into Commonwealth Parliamentary Workplaces. She has been responsible for several major global initiatives, including the OECD Social Institutions and Gender Index, UN Women’s global report on gender equality and the Sustainable Development Goals, and the UN Secretary General’s 20 and 25-year review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, She has a track record of designing innovative tools and influencing change at the highest levels in Australia, the UK at the OECD and United Nations. Somali Cerise is a gender equality and human rights expert with 20 years’ experience leading significant policy and research initiatives across Australia and globally. In 2016, Elizabeth was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia and was named 2016 NSW Australian of the Year. Comprising seventeen groups of over 270 national and international CEOs covering every major sector of the economy.Įlizabeth is Chair of Gender and Disaster Australia and a member of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership Advisory Council, Kings College London. She is the Founder and Convenor of the Champions of Change Coalition (formerly the Male Champions of Change), a globally recognised, disruptive strategy for achieving gender equality, advancing more and diverse women in leadership, and building respectful and inclusive workplaces. In this role, she undertakes UN country missions and has a global mandate to issue official UN communications to nation states drawing their attention to human rights violations, particularly against women and girls. In 2017, Elizabeth was appointed by the United Nations in Geneva as a Special Rapporteur and Independent Expert of the UN Working Group on discrimination against women and girls. Her review into the treatment of women in the Australian Defence Force led to sweeping cultural reforms. She established the nation’s data set on the prevalence of sexual harassment data, and built trend data which continues to inform evidence based policy today. She played a significant role in the introduction of Australia’s national paid parental leave scheme and progressed major law reform including in the area of sex discrimination and sexual harassment. One of her major achievements was the development and implementation of a gender equality blueprint for the nation, based on listening to the voices of Australians.
